A well executed design by Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer closely associated with the consumer products company Braun.

His tips are, I believe, can be applied to clothing design as well.

1. Useful – a product is bought to be used.  Emphasizes usefulness.
2. Innovative
3. Aesthetic – only well-executed objects can be beautiful
4. Understandable – clarifies the products structure.  It can make the product talk.  At best, it is self-explanatory.
5. Unobtrusive – restrained, subtle to leave room for the user’s self-expression.
6. Honest – it does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is.  It is true to what it really is.
7. Long-lasting – avoids being fashionable (quality craftsmanship)
8. Thorough down to the last detail – care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user.
9. Environmentally friendly – makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment.  It conserves resources and minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the lifestyle of the product.
10. Is as little design as possible – less, but better because it concentrates on the essential aspects and not burdened with non-essentials.  Back to purity and simplicity.
